The Handmade Essentials Jam is coming up from April 13 - 19! This channel is for jam participants to ask questions, share ideas, etc, and a place for us to make announcements during the jam.

The topic for this jam is to rebuild an "essential" program from scratch. It could be your take on a program bundled with your OS, a small utility you would find useful, or Solitaire for all I care. Whatever it is, the challenge is to build it from scratch, by hand.

How to participate

  1. If you haven't already, run the /joinjam command. This will help you set up and link your Handmade Network account, and will give you a Discord role that we can use to send announcements to all jam participants.
  2. Go to the jam website and create your project. Make sure you add a tag, e.g. &my-project.
  3. During the jam, build your project! You can share progress updates by posting in either #project-showcase or #jam with your project tag, e.g. Finally got my custom UI system working in &my-project!
  4. Before the jam ends, make sure your project submission has a thorough description and plenty of images and video of your program running.

Rules

  • No AI. Generating code with AI is prohibited.
  • No code before the jam starts. Conceptual / prep work is allowed, as are libraries, but all code must be written during the jam.
