We are releasing Zeiger, our new image viewer. It's completely free for personal and commercial use, on Windows and macOS.

A few years back I made an open source image viewer, Cactus Viewer. It was my first UI implementation, I haven't worked on it much since, and it's riddled with bugs.

With Blick we built a large engine for native desktop apps. Meanwhile Daniël has been building a platform-agnostic GPU API for us on Vulkan and Metal. It will replace Blick's renderer with something robust and modern, and it paves the way to Linux. Zeiger is the first app built on it.

What it does:

  • Runs on Windows and macOS, with Unicode file names
  • Simple UI, the controls fade out so the image gets the whole window, and a pin button keeps them on screen if you prefer
  • The controls take their colors from the image
  • Fit, Fill, 1:1 and Resize window, one key each
  • Picks up the other images in the folder automatically, in the sort order of Windows Explorer, Finder or FilePilot
  • Opens practically any format FFmpeg can decode, including HEIC, WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, PSD and OpenEXR, and DDS
  • GIF, APNG and animated WebP play, and you can scrub through the frames
  • Quick edits: crop, rotate, brightness, contrast, saturation, hue and gamma. duplicate save
  • Opens your Apple Photos library on the Mac, including photos in iCloud (right-click > Apple Photos library)
  • Performance settings for the VRAM budget, loader threads and read-ahead, you can tune it to your machine's perfomance
  • Works well with pixel art: filtering blends automatically from linear to nearest neighbor as you zoom in, with a pixel grid you can toggle
  • A color picker, with support for copying Hex, RGB, HSV, CSS and more common formats
  • Camera metadata (EXIF) with click to copy
  • Quick actions: copy the image or its path, show it in Explorer or Finder, rename, delete, or set it as your wallpaper
  • All actions are keymappable in the settings
